Priscilla: Romans 7:7-25
The Law of God and the Law of Sin

7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Let it not be! But I did not know sin except through Law; for also I did not know lust except the Law said, “You shall not lust.” Ex. 20:17

8 But sin taking occasion through the commandment worked every lust in me; for apart from Law, sin is dead.

9 And I was alive apart from Law once, but the commandment came, and sin came alive, and I died.

10 And the commandment which was to life, this was found to be death to me;

11 for sin taking occasion through the commandment deceived me, and through it killed me.

12 So indeed the Law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

13 Then that which is good, has it become death to me? Let it not be! But sin, that it might appear to be sin, having worked out death to me through the good, in order that sin might become excessively sinful through the commandment.

14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, having been sold under sin.

15 For what I work out, I do not know. For what I do not will, this I do. But what I hate, this I do.

16 But if I do what I do not will, I agree with the Law, that it is good.

17 But now I no longer work it out, but the sin dwelling in me.

18 For I know that in me, that is in my flesh, dwells no good. For to will is present to me, but to work out the good I do not find.

19 For what good I desire, I do not do. But the evil I do not desire, this I do.

20 But if I do what I do not desire, it is no longer I working it out, but the sin dwelling in me.

21 I find then the law, when I desire to do the right, that evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the Law of God according to the inward man;

23 but I see another law in my members having warred against the law of my mind, and taking me captive by the law of sin being in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then I myself with the mind truly serve the Law of God, and with the flesh the law of sin.

[Literal Translation of the Holy Bible]

Dear God, my Beloved Father, today I offer to You what I understand through meditation on Your Word, specifically Romans 7:7-25, about the law of good and the law of evil.

Dear God, in these Bible verses, the Apostle Paul speaks of his own sinful nature, as well as the sinful nature of all people in the world. Whether people have knowledge of the law or not, they are still ruled by sin until death, causing them to commit acts of sin. After death, they must face the terrible judgment of God, and they will be lost forever. Paul also says that people recognize God’s commandments and laws as holy, righteous, and good, and they want to obey them in their hearts, but their flesh is weak and unable to obey. Therefore, people continue to commit sin and violate God’s laws.

I know that God is holy and righteous. If people do not violate God’s law, they will live in peace, happiness, love, holiness, and righteousness. However, when people intentionally disobey God’s law, sin arises. From that point on, sin remains in the person who committed it, forcing them to do evil. Sin is disobedience to God and living in opposition to God’s law. Therefore, those who sin are condemned and punished by God’s law.

Dear God, verse 7 says, “I did not know lust except the Law said, ‘You shall not lust.'” I know that before the law was revealed, all people in the world had God’s law written on their hearts. They knew clearly what they should do to be good and avoid doing evil. But because humans have a tendency to sin and rebel against God’s commandments, they have sinned. God’s law was given to help people know what not to do in order to live, and also to show people how they have sinned and why they are being punished.

Dear God, I understand that all those who say they truly repent of their sins and fully acknowledge the redemption of sins by the Lord Jesus Christ but still live in sin and do not obey the commandments of God have not truly repented. A typical example is that they do not obey the fourth commandment, even though they have learned about God’s law. They have read the Bible, as well as read, watched, and listened to countless sermons about keeping the Sabbath day of the Lord. They know that the people of God do not work on the Sabbath day, which is the day of God, but they still work.

I understand that You loves human beings and all domestic animals. You want humans and animals to rest their physical bodies, not to work too hard, and to avoid harming their bodies. You also want Your people to gather together to worship You on the same day. Therefore, You established the Sabbath day, which is the seventh day of the week. Keeping the Sabbath day is a good commandment. I understand that people who work in fields such as doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, police officers, soldiers, etc., can work on the Sabbath day because it is a good thing to heal, rescue, and protect. The Lord Jesus Christ taught that it is permissible to do good on the Sabbath day. Unfortunately, nowadays, many people who know Your commandments have not glorified Your name by obeying Your commandments. They accept disobeying Your commandments to earn more money.

Thank You, God, by Your grace through the Lord Jesus Christ, I have been saved by Your mercy, through the redemption of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have been freed from the punishment of Your law, and freed from the reign of the law of sin. I am no longer condemned by Your law. For it is the Lord Jesus Christ who has taken upon Himself the punishment for all my sins. The law of sin no longer has power over me, it cannot force me to sin. I never intentionally return to living in sin to satisfy the desires of the flesh. I also know that I may make mistakes unintentionally, but I have complete redemption in Christ. I am grateful to the Triune God. Amen!

In the grace of Jesus Christ, my Lord.
