Priscilla: I Corinthians 6:12-20
Flee Sexual Immorality
12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
[King James Version]
Dear God, my Beloved Father, today I offer You my reflection on the Word of God in I Corinthians 6:12-20 regarding sexual immorality.
I understand verse 12 to mean that everything is permissible for Your people if it does not violate Your Ten Commandments. However, not everything is beneficial, and some things may lead to harm and sin. For example, it is not wrong for someone to desire a new, comfortable home with modern conveniences. But if they work day and night to earn enough money for it, even to the point of working on the Sabbath, then they have sinned by pursuing something lawful unlawfully. They have wasted their health, damaged the Temple of God, and violated the Sabbath.
I understand verse 13 to mean that You created food for humans to eat because we need it to grow and sustain life. However, the food is digested in the body and the body will also be destroyed when life departs from it. This implies that everything belonging to the physical world will pass away. The body of Your people belongs to You, and it must be used for worship and service to You. Therefore, Your people must not use their bodies for sexual immorality. Worship and service to You bring results that last forever.
I understand verse 14 to mean that You raised the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. All who truly repent and have faith in the salvation through Christ’s redemption will also have their fleshly bodies raised by Your power through Christ. These bodies will be glorified by the righteous acts in this life through worship and service to You.
I understand verses 15-18 to mean that the Apostle Paul repeatedly reminded the people of God that their bodies belonged to Christ, as the Temple of God, united with Him. Therefore, he advised them to stay away from sexual immorality and not have sexual relations with prostitutes. The sexual relations of the people of God with prostitutes cause their physical bodies to become one with the body of the prostitute. When the people of God have sexual relations with prostitutes, they are also joining the Temple of God with the temple of demons, thus defiling the Temple of God. It is also a sin against their own body.
I understand verses 19 and 20 to mean that those who have received God’s gift of salvation become the Temple of God, with the Holy Spirit dwelling in their bodies. They must use their physical and spiritual bodies to glorify, worship, and serve God, no longer living for themselves but for Him. Whatever they do, whether eating, drinking, or anything else, is done according to God’s will, brings benefit, and builds up the Church.
Father, please keep the spirits, souls, and physical bodies of every one of Your people in the Church holy and blameless, ready for the coming of our beloved Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
In the grace of Jesus Christ, my Lord.
